THE SOCKOL PROJECT

The Sockol Project is a modern sanctuary that melds seamlessly into the San Carlos hillside, all designed to enhance the natural topography.

BREATHTAKING

The Sockol Project, nestled in the heart of San Carlos, is an example of the magic that happens from designing with intention. Known for its challenging terrain and breathtaking views, San Carlos provided a canvas that was both daunting and inspiring. The homeownerā€™s backyard lay unused with a hillside that was more a concern than a comfort.

I first focused on maximizing usable space without excessive expenditure. A cut-and-fill strategy was key, creating flat, functional terraces while respecting the natural contours of the land. Engineered retaining walls gave structure and safety to the space, using a blend of travertine, IPE pavers, and stucco to integrate seamlessly with the environment.

For a client with an engineering background, who cherishes views from his home office, it was important to craft spaces that stir creativity. I designed an outdoor kitchen thatā€™s a chefā€™s delight, along with a floating bar that overlooks the hillside, perfect for moments of contemplation or casual drinks. Steps lead down to a cozy fire pit, an intimate setting framed by the vast San Carlos sky. And thereā€™s a special spot under the second pergola, just right for quiet chats and enjoying the solitude.

The Sockol Project was not just about creating a beautiful spaceā€”it was about crafting an environment that felt like an integral part of the hillside, a daily escape into nature's embrace for the homeowner.
